At Operation New Hope, we have always been in the business of giving people second chances through reconnecting them with the workforce and their families. In golf, the practice of granting a mulligan is a kind and humane gesture to make good on an otherwise woeful shot – an opportunity to correct. This practice of granting others second chances, or – mulligans – inspired our 1st Annual Mulligans for Hope Charity Golf Tournament.
Funds raised during this tournament will be used to provide workforce training, mental health services, and job placement for people affected by the criminal justice system. This funding will allow ONH to expand our Ready4Release and Ready4Work programs to additional locations around the state as well as investing in innovation to upgrade technology services and deliver more training.
To continue advancing our successful reentry programming and services, we rely on the help of fellow nonprofits like Goodwill to invest in our strategic expansion and technology upgrades. Goodwill works to enhance people’s dignity and quality of life by strengthening their communities, eliminating their barriers to opportunity, and helping them reach their full potential through learning and the power of work.
Goodwill was founded in Boston by Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister, and early social innovator. Helms created the Goodwill philosophy of “not charity, but a chance” when he collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of the city, then trained and hired people who were poor to mend and repair the used goods. The goods were then sold or given to the people who repaired them. Nearly 120 years later, Goodwill remains a household name and a leading nonprofit provider of educational and workforce-related services.
In 2020, Goodwill served nearly 22 million individuals worldwide and helped more than 126,000 people train for careers in industries such as banking, IT, and health care, to name a few, and get the supportive services they needed to be successful, such as English language training, additional education, and access to transportation and child care.
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive. Goodwill Industries International has a plan to collaborate with like-minded partners to ensure everyone has the skills and supports needed to earn a good job, advance in a sustainable career, and provide for their family.”
We are extremely honored to receive this support from Goodwill and can’t wait to see what this will do for our community! The Mulligans for Hope Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, October 25th at the Atlantic Beach Country Club.
