Open Road Bicycles in San Marco spearheaded an effort to donate bikes for Operation New Hope’s Ready4Work clients. When the owner of the bike shop located in the Miramar shopping center, Scott Gross, heard about the need for transportation so that the nonprofit’s clients could get to work after incarceration, he networked with the other four Open Road Bicycle stores to help out. To date, Operation New Hope has received three high quality used bikes to help solve their clients transportation needs. The bike experts at Open Road tuned each donation and Operation New Hope rigged the bike up with lights before handing them over for the clients to use.
For more than 20 years, Operation New Hope has been providing support and training to people with a prior record to help reconnect them to the workforce, their families and their communities. The local nonprofit motivates clients to become productive, responsible citizens saving taxpayers millions of dollars by avoiding repeated cost of incarceration and lost tax revenue.
These great bikes make jobs workable for the people the nonprofit is helping get back to work. One Ready4Work client recently told his job coach that the bus line stops 4 miles from his newly-acquired job, and the bike makes it possible for him to get to work on time now. Another recent graduate shared that the night shift hours she works left her with no way home. However, now that she has a bike, she can get to and from work safely and reliably. Operation New Hope rigged the bike up with lights and the clients are still employed.
