Presented at the UNF Lufrano Intercultural Gallery, Operation New Hope will exhibit works created by justice-involved artists to highlight how incarceration and art-making demand finding freedom in constraint and demonstrate that both require hope.
At Operation New Hope, our mission is to provide support and training designed to break the cycle of incarceration. As part of our Career Development and Mental Health services, Operation New Hope delivers weekly art therapy classes to our clients. Over the years, we have learned how powerful art and storytelling can be in healing. Through these art therapy sessions, we have prepared our clients for reentry success by providing another tool to use as they rebuild their lives after incarceration. Some of our clients have shared their art and writing with us through works created both in and outside of our program. And now, we would like to share these works with the community.
The Art of Hope aims to challenge the public’s perceptions of the criminal justice system by giving a voice to those who have been excluded due to incarceration. The exhibit emphasizes the parallels between incarceration and artmaking, as both require finding freedom within constraints and rely on the presence of hope. We invite the community to join us in celebrating the transformative power of art and to engage in meaningful conversations on the intersection of art, justice, and hope.
As part of The Art of Hope exhibit, we invite you to a special poetry workshop, where you will experience firsthand how art can be a transformative tool for healing and growth. Join celebrated poets Jessica Q. Stark, Devin D. Coleman, and Daniel Welch as they share their powerful works and lead an interactive writing exercise, modeled after those used with clients in Operation New Hope’s weekly Art Therapy sessions. This workshop will explore how creative expression can help process emotions, overcome personal challenges, and inspire hope.
Whether you are an experienced writer or simply curious about the therapeutic benefits of art, this workshop is for you. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to engage with the community and learn more about how Operation New Hope uses the arts to support those affected by incarceration.
