Crime & Violence Intervention Initiative (CVI)

Operation New Hope is uniquely positioned to support Community Violence Intervention (CVI) efforts because of our decades of experience and success in reentry services, workforce development, and holistic case management.  To further amplify our outreach, ONH is proud to invest in community-based prevention and intervention work.  We are now active partners in CVI initiatives in Jacksonville and Orlando.

Jacksonville

The City of Jacksonville (COJ) has been awarded a Department of Justice grant through Community-Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CVIPI).  CVIPI focuses on individuals and families in underserved communities who are at risk of committing violent crimes. Community Violence Intervention (CVI) is an approach that uses evidence-informed strategies to reduce violence through tailored, community-centered initiatives. These multidisciplinary strategies engage individuals and groups to prevent and disrupt cycles of violence and retaliation. By establishing relationships between individuals and their community assets, we can deliver services that save lives, address trauma, provide opportunities, and improve the physical, social, and economic conditions that drive violence.  Nationally, CVI programs involve holistic, coordinated interventions strategies aimed at reducing and preventing gun violence. ONH is working in conjunction with COJ to provide workforce development training, job placement, mental health support and other wrap around services to targeted individuals and families.

Orlando

The City of Orlando has received federal funds to support a CVI initiative known as Peace Orlando. The overall goals of Peace Orlando are to reduce homicides in Orlando, as well as prevent incidents of gun violence among program participants by working with national experts. Research demonstrates that only a fraction of 1% of people drive the majority of shootings, and intervention should be focused on those at highest risk for shooting and being shot to steer them away from violence. These individuals are referred to as “Neighborhood Change Associates” and will intervene to disrupt situations where violence appears imminent by serving as mentors, case managers and life coaches, and maintain daily contact with participants. This program pivots participants away from violent circumstances towards non-violent, economically, and socially productive lives. ONH is working in conjunction with Florida Rights Restoration Coalition (FRRC), Peace Orlando and the City of Orlando to provide workforce development training, job placement, mental health support and other wrap around services to targeted individuals and families.
