April 1st marks the beginning of Second Chance Month 2025—a time to raise awareness about the challenges people face after incarceration and to celebrate the life-changing power of opportunity. At Operation New Hope, this month holds special meaning as we work year-round to provide the support justice-impacted individuals need to rebuild their lives and thrive.
Nationally recognized since 2017, Second Chance Month began with the purpose to to highlight the barriers faced by over 1 in 3 Americans with a criminal record. Backed by bipartisan support and a presidential proclamation, it has grown into a nationwide movement to promote redemption, reduce stigma, and expand access to second chances.
At its core, Second Chance Month calls on us to challenge the stigma of justice involvement and advocate for fair policies and programs that give people a real opportunity to start again. That’s why our organization’s focus is to offer comprehensive reentry services across Florida—providing the tools, support, and hope people need to overcome barriers and build successful futures.
“Second Chance Month is a powerful reminder that redemption is possible and that everyone deserves the opportunity to transform their life,” said Reggie Fullwood, President and CEO of Operation New Hope. “Since 1999, we’ve been committed to walking alongside people returning from incarceration—helping them secure meaningful employment, reach their goals, and renew their sense of hope. With more than 16,000 lives already transformed, we know our work is far from over. This month—and every month—we remain dedicated to breaking down barriers and expanding opportunities for the over 600,000 individuals returning home from Florida’s jails and prisons each year. At Operation New Hope, second chances are at the heart of everything we do.“
Each year, thousands of people return home to communities across Florida after periods of incarceration in county, state, or federal prisons. Despite paying their debt to society and making strides toward change, many face overwhelming barriers to employment, housing, and education.
Without access to basic needs and meaningful opportunities, the risk of returning to incarceration increases. But when people receive real support upon their return—when they are given a true second chance—they are far more likely to succeed and contribute positively to their communities.
At Operation New Hope, we know that opportunity drives change. That’s why we provide comprehensive reentry support across Florida. Our wrap-around services empower individuals to take control of their future and thrive both personally and professionally.
This stigma surrounded by involvement in the justice system is not one that can be ignored. Most people in our country are impacted by these barriers, whether directly or indirectly—and we all have a role to play in supporting successful reentry in our communities. That might mean volunteering, offering support, contributing as a community partner, or becoming a second chance employer.
Join us this April as we celebrate Second Chances and the power of opportunity through community events, volunteer opportunities, and inspiring stories of transformation!
We provide support, life and job skills training for people affected by the criminal justice system and place them in employment that offers a sustainable quality of life.
