Celebrating Creativity and Resilience at The Art of Hope Poetry Workshop

The Art of Hope Poetry Workshop brought an evening of inspiration, creativity, and powerful storytelling to our Jacksonville community. Held at the UNF Lufrano Intercultural Gallery, the workshop highlighted voices within the justice-impacted community, showcasing their resilience and self-expression through the arts.

We were honored to welcome local poets Jessica Stark, Devin Coleman, and Daniel Welch,  who each shared original works that brought emotion and insight into the human experience. Jessica read selections from her published book, Buffalo Girl, a moving tribute to her mother that explores themes of resilience and hope. Devin shared from his own book, Prisoner to Poet, capturing his experiences with incarceration, challenges within the justice system, and finding hope despite growing up amidst violence and hardship in Jacksonville. Their powerful voices brought unique perspectives on hope and healing, while Daniel led attendees through a writing exercise using the “feelings wheel,” encouraging everyone to connect with their emotions and express their own stories through poetry.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, including Operation New Hope staff, UNF students, family members, and friends. We are deeply grateful for your support in celebrating second chances and the transformative power of art.

Following the workshop, attendees toured the gallery exhibit, a stunning collection of works created by justice-impacted artists. Each piece tells a story of hope, healing, and new beginnings. The exhibit remains open to the public until November 7th, and we invite everyone to experience these powerful works of art.

To celebrate the exhibit’s closing, join us on November 7th at 5:30 p.m. for an evening of art, connection, hors d’oeuvres, and refreshments. Tickets are available for purchase, and UNF students can attend for free. We look forward to welcoming the community to this special event as we continue to support creativity, resilience, and transformation—because hope truly starts here!
