On Thursday February 20th, Operation New Hope Board Members Karen Holt, Stephen Colson, and Ashley Pratt, along with our Board Chair Coley Jones and ONH President/CEO Reggie Fullwood, attended the Mobile Reentry Unit Ribbon Cutting Event in St. Johns County. This innovative initiative, led by the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) and the Florida Foundation for Correctional Excellence (FFCE), aims to bring essential reentry services directly into communities, reducing barriers for individuals seeking a second chance.

The event featured inspiring remarks from several key leaders in reentry and public safety, including:

  • Erica Averion, Executive Director of the Florida Foundation for Correctional Excellence
  • Jason Caban, Director of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Department
  • Brenda Mintell, Assistant Regional Director of the Florida Department of Corrections

Each speaker highlighted the vital impact of accessible reentry services in reducing recidivism and building stronger communities.

The unit provides a dedicated space for job interview practice, recovery resources, and essential items like food, helping formerly incarcerated individuals successfully reintegrate.

Corrections managers hope the unit will lower recidivism rates, ease overcrowding in jails and prisons, and contribute to a safer community.

Serving the Daytona Circuit—including Volusia, Flagler, St. Johns, and Putnam Counties—this unit represents a significant step forward in expanding access to reentry support. By meeting individuals where they are, initiatives like this help break down logistical and financial barriers, ensuring that more people receive the guidance and resources they need to successfully reintegrate.

At Operation New Hope, we believe that reentry is a community effort, and we are proud to support programs that make a real difference in people’s lives. We are excited to see how this Mobile Reentry Unit enhances second chances, strengthens families, and builds safer communities across the counties it serves.
